When Prakash Churaman was only 15, he was arrested and charged with the murder of his best friend — a murder he did not commit. He was coerced into a false confession by two NYPD detectives after gruelling interrogation. “I felt trapped,” he remembered. “I felt like I had no other choice but to say whatever they wanted to hear.”
Prakash spent the last 6 years in jail, mostly at Riker’s. He just recently go out on bail. Last summer, the original conviction was overturned and he is now awaiting a new trial. Queens prosecutors are offering Prakash a deal to shorten his sentence if he pleads guilty for a lesser charge. However, he maintains his innocence and is fighting for his freedom.
We will not rest until Prakash is free.
